Services that will cease following a number port
Number portability is a regulated facility which allows customers to keep their numbers when changing provider. Porting a number from the PSTN network to VoIP will cease all services associated with the number. However, there is a way to retain a PSTN service whilst porting the number which will be explained below.
PSTN services
Porting the number will cease the underlying PSTN service. The line will become inactive and you will not be able to make any further calls.
Broadband
Any broadband that relies on a copper PSTN line to function will cease. This includes ADSL, FTTC and Gfast.
Alarm systems
PSTN alarms are still popular despite the upcoming PSTN switch-off. Before porting a PSTN number, you should check whether an alarm system is using the line. There are IP-based alarm alternatives available or GSM / Mobile Network solutions.
Retaining the PSTN service whilst porting the number
If you wish to retain the PSTN service but also port the Caller ID to another provider, the PSTN service provider can renumber the PSTN line whilst reserving the original Caller ID on your account. After this is completed, you are free to port the original number to another provider. Please contact your PSTN provider to arrange this.
